Papal Blessing for Jo and Julian Lewry

Two parishioners - Jo and Julian Lewry - have recently received a Papal Apostolic Blessing from Pope Leo for their fundraising work for CAFOD (Catholic Agency For Overseas Development).

The Blessing was presented to the couple at Mass at St John's, Farncombe, on Sunday 5th July.

Christine Allen, Director of CAFOD said: “It is such an honour to receive Pope Leo’s blessing, and this highlights the significant role that volunteers play in strengthening communities and building a better world. Volunteers such as Jo and Julian continue to inspire all of us through their service. Their example reminds us of the importance of working for the common good.”

Jo and Julian’s incredible work to support the CAFOD and our wider community includes  major campaigns such as ‘Cancel Debt and Make Poverty History’, arranging to meet with the local MP regarding CAFOD’s work, organising parish fast day talks and collections, organising fundraising activities such quiz nights, concert nights, cake sales, and parish sponsored walks - as well as overseeing and establishing a highly successful Live Simply group in the parish. through their work they have raised several thousand pounds a year for CAFOD for more than 30 years.

The announcement was covered by BBC South East where Jo was quoted as saying that the blessing was "not really for us - it is for all the parish".  The news was also picked up by our local MP, Jeremy Hunt, who wrote in his constituency newsletter:

“Congratulations to Julian and Jo Lewry from Godalming, who have received a Papal Blessing from Pope Leo in recognition of more than 30 years of voluntary fundraising for CAFOD. A thoroughly well-deserved honour for two remarkable local volunteers and we are proud of you!”

Words we can all agree with!
